Metro Parks Theater Academy Classes
Metro Parks Theater Academy is a place for students ages 3-18 to learn all about theater no matter if their interest is acting & directing, singing & dancing, or the technical aspects of putting on a production. Students will spend time discovering and developing their theater talents and will have a chance to showcase what they learn in a low-stakes performance setting.
All classes have open enrollment unless otherwise noted. Locations for classes include the Centennial Performing Arts Studios(CPAS), McCabe Park Community Center(McCabe), Madison Park Community Center(Madison), and the Z. Alexander Looby Theater(Looby).

This fall, Metro Parks Theater introduced brand-new Musical Theater classes for ages 3-18, laugh-out-loud Children’s Improv, and exciting Acting for the Screen training. Whether your young star loves the stage, the screen, or both, Metro Parks Theater Academy is a place for them to shine, grow, and have a blast!

Musical Theater
Dance for the stage with singing!
Broadway Babies | 3-4.5 years
In this class young performers who love to sing & twirl are introduced to foundational theatrical principles. Students begin training in expressing themselves through imagination, teamwork, musicality, movement & song in a developmentally appropriate way that helps spark and feed the joy of song & dance!

Primary Musical Theater | 5-9 years

Theater Dance
Dance for the stage without singing!
Intro to Theater Tap & Jazz | 5-9 years
Build confidence and dance skills while exploring the basics of tap, jazz, and musical theater dance in a fun, nurturing environment! This class is appropriate for beginners.

Theater Tap & Jazz | 10-14 years
Continue to build confidence and dance skills while exploring theatrical tap, jazz, and musical theater dance. This class is geared towards the later beginner or students with some experience. Students can expect to be introduced to material at a higher rate and intensity while remaining in a fun, nurturing environment!

Acting for the Stage & Screen
Learn the art of performance without the song & dance.
Scenes and Monologues | 11-13 years
In a supportive, creative environment, students explore character development, voice, and movement through engaging scenes and monologues. They learn to analyze scripts, make strong acting choices, and connect emotionally with material. Emphasis is placed on listening, reacting truthfully, and building confidence speaking alone and with partners. Collaboration, constructive feedback, and stage presence skills help them grow as performers while strengthening focus, empathy, and communication – both onstage and in everyday life.

Acting for Screen | 10-13 years

Acting for Screen | 14-18 years
Teens ages 14-18 take their skills to the next level with advanced on-camera techniques, in-depth character study, and industry-style rehearsals. They gain experience in everything from audition prep to working with scene directors, leaving them ready to shine both on set and in front of the camera.

Shakespeare Club | 10-18 years
A fun, welcoming class for theater-loving students ages 10–18 who want to explore big characters, bold stories, and some of the most famous scenes ever written. No experience is necessary — just a love for theater and a willingness to play! Through games, acting exercises, and scene work, students will learn how to make Shakespeare’s language feel clear, exciting, and alive. This club is perfect for curious performers who want to build confidence, sharpen their acting skills, and discover that Shakespeare can be dramatic, hilarious, and surprisingly relatable.

Improvisational Theater
The study of creating scenes & characters on the spot!
Children’s Improvisation | 7-10 years
An improv class for ages 7-10 is a joyful, high-energy playground for the imagination! Through fun games, storytelling, and quick-thinking exercises, kids learn acting techniques like character creation, voice, and movement. They practice teamwork, active listening, and thinking on their feet – skills that boost confidence and adaptability. Mistakes become opportunities, helping children embrace creativity without fear. Friendships grow and students discover how to collaborate, share ideas, and shine both onstage and in everyday life. It’s not just acting – it’s building life skills wrapped in play, where every “Yes, and…” opens the door to new adventures.

CLASS PRE-REQUISITES
No experience necessary for theater classes. Students new and experienced alike will benefit from a shared environment with their peers. Theater classes help build confidence and leadership skills in addition to growing skills for the stage.

AGE REQUIREMENTS
Students must be the minimum age by September 2nd, 2026 for both the Fall 2026 and Winter/Spring 2027 Sessions. This age requirement aligns with the MNPS age requirement for the school year.
